Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan has always been a figure of immense curiosity and admiration, not just for his cinematic feats but also for the stories and memories that shape the man behind the superstar image. One such emotional anecdote that resonated with many came during his appearance on Amitabh Bachchan’s popular television quiz show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. The superstar revealed a deeply personal reason behind never having visited Kashmir — a promise to his late father.

Shah Rukh shared that his paternal grandmother was Kashmiri, which made the connection to the region even more meaningful. Recalling a heartfelt conversation with his father, he said, “My father’s mother was Kashmiri. To unhone mujhe zindagi mein bola tha teen jagah zaroor dekhna life mein, main rahun ya naa rahun. Ek Istanbul zaroor dekhna, ek Italy main Rome zaroor dekhna aur ek Kashmir hai zaroor dekhna. Lekin baaki do mere bina bhi dekh lena par Kashmir mere bina mat dekhna.” (“My father told me that in life, make sure you visit Istanbul, Rome, and Kashmir at least once, whether I’m here or not. However, you can visit the other two without me, but don’t go to Kashmir without me.”)

This poignant memory stayed with him long after his father's passing. Shah Rukh added, “So he died very early. I have been all over the world lekin main Kashmir kabhi nahi gaya. Bohot saare mauke bhi mile, doston ne bohot bulaya, ghar wale chutti pe bhi gaye, par main Kashmir kabhi nahi gaya. Kyunki mere father ne kaha tha ki Kashmir mere bina mat dekhna, Kashmir main dikhaaunga.” (“He passed away very early. I’ve been all over the world but I never went to Kashmir. I had many opportunities — friends invited me, family went on vacations — but I never went. Because my father had told me not to see Kashmir without him, that he would show it to me himself.”)

This revelation struck an emotional chord with audiences, many of whom related to the depth of respect and love Shah Rukh holds for his father’s words. The promise made in childhood, and the commitment to that promise even after decades, showcased a more intimate, grounded side of the star.

However, eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that Shah Rukh had visited Kashmir while shooting for Yash Chopra’s romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). Locations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Ladakh, and Pangong Lake were among the picturesque spots featured in the film. One fan noted online, “Dunno what was the date of this KBC episode but he did visit Kashmir with Yash Chopra when he was doing JTHJ shooting there back in 2011-12.”

Still, many came to his defense, explaining that while he didn’t get to visit Kashmir with his own father, he went there with his mentor and “father figure” Yash Chopra. The emotional context of his statement seemed to refer more to a personal, heartfelt visit rather than one done professionally or for work commitments.
